Zig-Zag is a brand of rolling papers that originated in France. In 1855, the Zig-Zag Company was founded by Maurice and Jacques Braunstein. The Zig-Zag companybuilt the Papeterie de Gassicourt based in Paris in 1882, a cigarette paper production plant near the town of Mantes-la-Jolie. The company invented the process of interleaving rolling paper in 1894. The Zig-Zag company was awarded a gold metal at the Universal Exposition in Paris in in 1900. In 1919, success led to expansion to a new mill in Thonon-les-Bains. The Company’s original facility in Mantes-la-Jolie was destroyed and at the war’s end, all production was shifted to the Thonon factory, during Warld War II. The Zig-Zag company brand produces primarily hand-rolled tobacco related products such as Cigarette rolling papers, cigarette tubes and rolling accessories. The Zouave soldier portrayed on the front of Zig-Zag products is colloquially known as the “Zig-Zag man.”
